BUT before we rejoice let us pose and ask ourselves one question. Is this the constitution that we can live with?
To my opinion this is not. I listened to our leaders urging us to vote for it even though there were areas we disagree with because there is always a chance to amend those contentious clauses at a later date. Now where is the wisdom in this.
There are fundamental issues which as Christians we can not accept.
- The state must be separated from religion at all cost even if it means going against the wish of majority if we hope to get a constitution that will respect the right of every one.
- Elevating one religious group over the others however remotely is a tantamount to courting chaos.
- If our judicial systems can not operate equitably on all matters secular or otherwise then we have a course to worry.
The constitution may not have indicated in black and white that the state religion is Islam but this insertion give them right to argue so. What is more is that this court does not even have relevance to all Muslims but is a matter of choice. Do you really believe that there is no hidden agenda?
We may argue that this is a right they have enjoyed even in the old constitution. Yes it is true but wrongly so. The intention of reviewing was to correct such anomalies. So wake up to this call. Do not sell your birth right. The consequences may be too bitter to contemplate.
